I’m involved with a group of successful entrepreneurs and we often talk about how easy it is to beat yourself up when you have to put your business on hold for personal reasons.
This same problem came up with one of my mentees because of family and work commitments.
It’s easy to get “off track” when your family needs help, you are working while starting your event planning business, or you’re dealing with other stuff, whatever that may be.
This happens to me too and probably more than you imagine.
Take Guilt Free Time Off
There are times when I need a few days (and sometimes weeks!) to focus on matters outside work or need time to simply recharge. I know it’s better to admit to myself that I need the time off, schedule it, and take a break without guilt.
Otherwise, I’m trying to rest and all I’m thinking is “I should be working”, which hardly makes it a rest at all!
It’s Your Event Planning Business!
That’s one of the best parts about having your own event planning business. When personal stuff comes up, you have the freedom to take a break and deal with it. You don’t have to phone a boss and (try to) explain why you can’t come into work.
If something happens at the last minute and you have to run out and do something personal, you can do that. Unless you’re expected at a client’s office, or you’ve booked a presentation or other commitment, your time is always your own to spend as you’d like. We don’t have to get down on ourselves for not working because we’re dealing with personal stuff or taking a vacation.
There is no point in thinking, “I’m supposed to be working on all of my event planning business ideas. I’m failing because I’m totally off-track.”
Such thinking doesn’t make you feel any better or inspire you in any way. In fact it’s probably killing your event planning business. Instead of beating yourself up for taking a break, give yourself permission to take time to help my friends or family, to relax and take a vacation or day off to rejuvenate.
Freedom and Flexibility – It’s Yours To Embrace
Having your own event planning business and being your own boss means you have the flexibility to structure your time and energy the way you need to, and you’ll be much happier for allowing yourself that freedom to enjoy it. Do you have trouble taking time off for yourself?
